Each film system configures Filmbox to emulate a different photochemical workflow and contains a set of negatives, lab parameters, and print processes that are designed to be compatible with each other.
Vision3
The definition of the “film look,” Vision3 is the last complete system of negatives and print stock still in production. It has shaped nearly every project shot on film in the past two decades and is known for its wide latitude, fine grain, and natural color.
Vintage Cinema
This is a collection of 30 discontinued Kodak and Fuji stocks from 1999 to 2013 that we characterized in 2024. Their varied and aged nature produces a wide spectrum of organic renditions of color and contrast—some appearing fresh and modern, others carrying a unique, time-worn patina. The Lab module for this system offers additional Neutralize and De-Fog parameters to de-age them to taste. The Print module is the same as for Vision3.
Ektachrome ECN-2
This system emulates motion picture Ektachrome that has been cross-processed in ECN-2 chemistry to produce a negative, as is often done for motion picture production. The result is a strong, expressive look (e.g., Euphoria) with a fair amount of micro-contrast and grain that results in a high-contrast image if printed.
The print module for this system is tailored for Ektachrome: Extended simulates a telecine-style transform built for the negative’s unique response. Full simulates a print resulting in high contrast, and Standard provides a middle between the two.
Cinema - Bleach Bypass
Bleach bypass can be done to a negative or a print; in this case, we applied it to the negative to produce the “Minority Report” look. It’s presented here in ten strengths with the same print module as Vision3.
Photo - Color C-41
This system emulates the world of color still photography. It has over 30 negative stocks, including nearly every still photo stock in production and many that are discontinued, grouped into 6 categories.
The print module is built for Photo negatives: Full simulates photochemical printing of the negative to photosensitive paper, Extended emulates a laboratory scan of the negative, and Standard is a midpoint between them.
Photo - Black & White
This system emulates B&W still photography negatives, varying in grain, highlight bloom, and chromatic response.
The print module is tailored for B&W negatives: Full simulates printing the negative to photosensitive paper, Extended emulates a laboratory scan of the negative, and Standard is a midpoint between them.
Photo - Reversal E-6
This system emulates reversal films which develop into a projectable positive that we have directly characterized. These stocks tend to have a realistic and neutral color response and low grain.
This process doesn’t involve a negative, but a Negative module is still provided with the same controls as the other systems for consistency. Similarly, there is no separate Print step for these stocks, but we still include a print module with variables that directly control their characteristics. This system cannot be used in Negative Only or Print Only modes.
Filmbox has many flavors of Ektachrome, and the version in this system is how it was designed to be developed. We also included 2 Instax instant films in this system.
